How to Add Google Analytics to Your Blog for Tracking

Method One (WordPress Only): Use a Plugin

Tip: Before you do this, visit your “theme options” (under appearance in the left sidebar in your dashboard) and make sure there’s not already a place to enter your tracking ID – why have extra plugins if you don’t need them?).

  1. Go to your WordPress Dashboard and visit the Plugins dashboard.
  2. Get the Google Analytics Plugin and install.
    1. OR download the plugin here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/googleanalytics/
  3.  Activate the plugin, enter your tracking ID and you’re in business.

Method Two: Add to Your Blog Template (No Plugin Needed, Works for Any Website Platform)

  1. Copy the longer code Google displays for you. This is not limited to but it does include your UA code.
  2. Paste the entire code, without any added characters or spaces, just before the ending head tag in your HTML code.
Pro-Hack: Search within the code to find this tag – “Ctrl+F” on a PC or “Command+F” on a Mac. In the “Find” box, type “</head>” (without the quotation marks).
  3. Be sure to hit “Save.” This is it – note that Google says you won’t have to place the code snippet on every single page of your website.

That’s all there is to it!

Then, you just wait for Google to recognize the installed code (can take up to 24 hours).

  • When everything is installed correctly, you’ll see the following: “Status: Receiving Data.”
  • This will appear next to “Tracking ID.”
  • Next, you get to start the fun part: tracking your numbers and learning ways to make your site better.
